The Alliance for Housing Solutions, a nonprofit housing education, policy and advocacy organization based in Arlington, Virginia, is seeking a part-time communications associate averaging 15 hours per week. This role requires the ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks simultaneously.

The ideal candidate will have knowledge of affordable housing and related issues, familiarity with the Arlington community and a passion for social justice and advocacy work.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Write content for website, newsletters, press releases and other publications.

  • Plan and manage social media messages, graphics and campaigns.

  • Create email newsletters and website posts in MailChimp and Squarespace.

  • Edit and proofread all written materials to ensure high quality.

  • Assist with writing funding proposals and reports.

  • Participate in the planning and staffing of special events.

  • Help identify topics and audiences for community education and outreach.

  • Develop and manage relationships with key organization stakeholders and audiences.

  • Attend occasional events and meetings to represent AHS and document outcomes.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in communications or policy-related field (e.g. urban planning, economics, political science).

  • Minimum 2-3 years of professional work experience, preferably working with nonprofits, advocacy organizations or community groups.

  • Excellent writing and editing skills.

  • Strong computer skills including Office 365 (Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and internet applications.

  • Experience using various social media sites (Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn) and social media management tools (e.g. Hootsuite).

  • Experience with, or ability to quickly come up to speed on, web content and contact management systems such as Squarespace and Salesforce and email marketing tools such as MailChimp.

  • Design skills and experience with basic graphics and publishing software such as Canva, Microsoft Publisher or Adobe InDesign is a plus.
